Evidence record EV-0011

Coding agents mostly read instruction files, not docs sites

An observational study of 557 agentic coding sessions (preprint) found that instruction files and working notes made up 60.5% of agents' documentation interactions, against 10.6% for classical technical documentation and 1.3% for API references.

Evidence class: Preprint. Unreviewed. Many are by one author or a small team, and some authors have a stake in the result. Most AX research is in this class today. Pattern tags: docs-for-agents, agents-md.

Effect, as the source reports it

  • Share of documentation interactions by document type. Direction: not-applicable. Size: Instruction files and working notes 60.5%; classical technical documentation 10.6%; API references 1.3%. Sample: 557 sessions; 94,813 development events; 3,033 documentation interactions.
  • What prompts a documentation consultation. Direction: not-applicable. Size: Self-initiated 70.2%; failure-driven 7.5%. Sample: As above.
  • Behavioural support for "actionable" and "verifiable" documentation. With the change: Both properties lack consistent behavioural support. Direction: not-applicable. Size: No consistent support. Sample: As above, plus 33,097 agentic pull requests.

Agent profile

  • Note on models: Sessions from the public SWE-chat dataset and pull requests from AIDev; agents and models vary and are not named in the abstract.

Limitations

  • Preprint, not peer reviewed.
  • Observational: it shows what agents read, not what helps them.

For designers

For coding agents, the document most likely to be read is the repository instruction file, such as AGENTS.md, not your docs site. Do not assume that making docs "actionable" or "verifiable" changes what agents do; this study found no consistent support for either.
